Faculty team led by Prof. Miriam Cohen qualifies for The Hague Moot Court Competition

Three students will represent the Faculty of Law of the Université de Montréal at the French-language mock trial competition: the "International Criminal Court Mock Trial" in The Hague, Netherlands.

Aimed at graduate students, the competition "Moot Court at the International Criminal Court" is organized by the Hague Academy of International Law. It "aims to stimulate the study of international criminal law, to contribute to the education of young lawyers and to help strengthen skills and knowledge in international criminal law".

The competition has three consecutive phases:

The writing of the briefs (qualification phase);

The pleadings;

The final.

Based on a fictitious case, each team must present its arguments on both the Prosecution and Defense sides.

The team representing the Université de Montréal is composed of four students enrolled in the doctoral program at the Faculty of Law:

Alexia Argiolas, in her second year of doctoral studies, is working on "The right to die and the autonomy of the human person" under the supervision of Professor Catherine Régis. She is also deeply interested in international law issues.

Audrey Lamarre, in her second year of doctoral studies, is interested in the International Criminal Court by analyzing the influence of non-legal determinants on the decisions rendered by the judges of this court regarding the participation and reparation of victims. She works under the supervision of Prof. Amissi Manirabona.

Gaëlle Foucault, in her third year of doctoral studies, is studying the institutional system established between the International Criminal Court and the United Nations under the supervision of Professor Isabelle Duplessis and Professor Amissi Manirabona.

Tchimou Yannick Kévin Aké, in his fourth year of doctoral studies, is analyzing reparation before the International Criminal Court by asking the question "what right for victims?" He is working under the supervision of Professor Amissi Manirabona.

The UdeM team benefits from the strong and essential support of Prof. Miriam Cohen who accepted to be their coach for this competition.

The team is pleased and proud to announce that among the forty or so teams registered, it is among the ten selected to plead in The Hague. The team would like to thank the Faculty of Law for its support, as well as the faculty staff, who were the source of much encouragement.

The first pleadings will take place on May 30 2022!
