Professor Miriam Cohen participates in the second congress of the Mukwege International Chair

On November 3rd, Professor Miriam Cohen participated in the second congress of the Mukwege International Chair, held at the Université Évangélique en Afrique (U.E.A.) in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. The central theme of the conference was reparation for victims of sexual and gender-based violence. The congress aimed to study this theme under four pillars: medical, socio-economic, psychological and legal.

Everywhere in the world, as soon as conflicts break out, sexual violence against women and girls (and sometimes children) follows: rape is a weapon of war. And on a daily basis, women and girls are victims of gender-based violence.

These dehumanising practices raise the question of how to prevent this violence and its origins, but also how to repair it, how to rebuild the medical and psychological health of these women and young children, and finally, what will become of these living witnesses to the barbarity of men? The prevention, recognition and eradication of these acts are an international responsibility, and it is a long term task, full of questions and unanswered questions.

The second International Congress of the Mukwege Chair at the Evangelical University in Africa (UEA / Bukavu) in November 2022 will focus on this issue and its specificity, and will develop the first answers in an interdisciplinary manner.
